What is test and tag?

Simple Checks That Keep Your Workplace Safe

Test and tag is the inspection and electrical testing of portable equipment – appliances, extension leads, power boards and tools – to make sure it is safe to use. Each item gets a visual inspection for damage, then electrical tests such as earth continuity, insulation resistance or leakage, and polarity on leads.

Items that pass are fitted with a tag showing who tested them, the test date and the retest date. Items that fail are taken out of service. Because we are licensed electricians, failed leads and fittings can often be repaired or replaced during the same visit.

Test and Tag Requirements in Queensland

For many workplaces, yes. Here is how the obligations fit together.

Electrical Safety Regulation 2013

Requires certain equipment to be inspected and tested, including equipment used in construction, manufacturing, amusement, office and service work.

Work Health & Safety Duties

Businesses have a general duty to keep electrical equipment safe for workers and visitors.

AS/NZS 3760

The Australian Standard for in-service safety inspection and testing – the accepted way to meet these duties.

Test intervals

How Often Equipment Should Be Tested

Intervals depend on how harsh the environment is. Typical AS/NZS 3760 guidance ranges from:

Construction Sites

Around every three months, where equipment is moved and handled roughly.

Factories & Workshops

More frequent testing than offices, reflecting heavier use.

Hire Equipment

Inspected and tested before each hire, with periodic testing.

Low-Risk Offices

Longer intervals – up to five years for equipment not moved or roughly handled.

We recommend an interval for each area of your workplace based on the current edition of AS/NZS 3760 and how equipment is used.
RCD testing

RCD and Safety Switch Testing

AS/NZS 3760 also covers residual current devices – the safety switches on your switchboard and portable RCD units. Checks include a push-button test that staff can do themselves and an instrument test of how quickly each RCD trips.

Testing RCDs and portable equipment in the same visit is usually the most efficient approach for businesses, and it gives you one set of records.

FAQs

Test and Tag FAQs

Is test and tag required in Queensland?

For many workplaces, yes. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 requires certain electrical equipment to be inspected and tested, including equipment used in construction, manufacturing, amusement, office and service work. Businesses also have a general duty under work health and safety laws to keep electrical equipment safe. Testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to meet these duties.

How often does electrical equipment need to be tested and tagged?

It depends on the environment. Under AS/NZS 3760, intervals range from every three months for equipment on construction and demolition sites to as long as five years for equipment in low-risk settings such as offices, where equipment is not moved around or roughly handled. Factories, workshops and hire equipment fall in between.

Who can test and tag in Queensland?

Testing must be done by a competent person – someone with the training, test equipment and knowledge to inspect and test to AS/NZS 3760. Licensed electricians meet this requirement and can also repair or replace faulty items. Other testers usually hold a dedicated test-and-tag qualification, but they cannot carry out electrical repairs.

What happens if an item fails testing?

A failed item is removed from use immediately and fitted with an out-of-service or danger tag so nobody uses it by mistake. It is then repaired by a licensed electrician and retested, or disposed of. Common failures are damaged leads, broken plugs, failed insulation and faulty power boards.

Does test and tag include RCD testing?

AS/NZS 3760 also covers residual current devices – the safety switches on switchboards and portable RCD units. Checks include a push-button test that users can do themselves and an instrument test of how quickly the RCD trips. Testing RCDs and portable equipment in the same visit is usually the most efficient approach.

What records should a business keep after test and tag?

Each tested item gets a tag showing who tested it, the test date and the retest date. You should also receive a register listing each item, its location, the result and the next due date. Keep these records, because they show compliance to insurers, auditors and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.
