Safety Switch Installation on the Sunshine Coast
Safety switches cut the power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to earth – the protection that can stop an electric shock from becoming a tragedy. We install and test them for homes, rentals and businesses.

Protection for People, Not Just Wiring
A safety switch – or residual current device (RCD) – constantly compares the current flowing out on a circuit with the current coming back. If some leaks to earth, for example through a person touching a faulty appliance, it disconnects the power almost instantly.
Fuses and circuit breakers are different: they protect wiring from overload and short circuits, but they do not detect earth leakage. That is why a home with only fuses, or with a single safety switch on the power circuits, is missing protection that current standards expect.

When to Add or Upgrade Safety Switches
One Safety Switch – or None
A single RCD can mean one fault cuts power to the whole house.
Unprotected Circuits
Lighting, air conditioning or hot water circuits without RCD protection.
Ceramic Fuses
Older boards may need replacing to fit modern protection.
Renovations & Extensions
New or altered circuits must meet current Wiring Rules.
Pools & Outdoor Areas
Wet areas and outdoor power need reliable protection.
Rentals
Landlords need power-point circuits protected and records kept.
Safety Switch Requirements in Queensland
The rules depend on the type of property. In summary:
New Homes & New Work
RCD protection is required on circuits under the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.
Rental Properties
Safety switches are required on power-point circuits.
Homes Being Sold
The contract must disclose whether a safety switch is installed.
Existing Homes
The Electrical Safety Office recommends protecting every circuit, including lighting.
RCDs, RCBOs and Switchboard Upgrades
There are two common ways to add protection. Safety switches (RCDs) on the switchboard protect a group of circuits each, while RCBOs combine a safety switch and circuit breaker for every individual circuit – so a fault on one circuit does not take others down with it.
Under current Wiring Rules, a home’s final subcircuits should be spread across at least two RCDs, with no more than three circuits on any one. If your board is full, has ceramic fuses or shows heat damage, replacing it is usually the safer option.
Board assessmentTesting Your Safety Switches – and Why They Trip
Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office recommends pressing the test button on each safety switch every three months. It should trip immediately. Turn off sensitive equipment first, then reset it. We also test operating time with an instrument when we install or check switches.
Repeated tripping usually means the switch is doing its job. Common causes are a faulty appliance, moisture in outdoor fittings, damaged cabling or too many circuits on one RCD. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset; if it trips again with nothing plugged in, call us. For workplaces, see test and tag, which includes RCD testing.

Safety Switches FAQs
Is an RCD the same as a safety switch?
Yes. Safety switch is the everyday name for a residual current device (RCD). It monitors the current flowing in a circuit, and if some current leaks to earth, for example through a person, it disconnects power within a fraction of a second. An RCBO combines a safety switch and a circuit breaker in one device.
Are safety switches mandatory in Queensland?
Queensland requires safety switches on power-point circuits in rental properties. When a home is sold, the contract must state whether one is installed. New homes and most new electrical work must have RCD protection under the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. The Electrical Safety Office recommends protecting every circuit, including lighting.
How often should I test my safety switch?
Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office recommends pressing the test button on each safety switch every three months. The switch should trip straight away. Turn off sensitive equipment first, then reset the switch afterwards. If a safety switch does not trip when tested, have a licensed electrician check it as soon as possible.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Repeated tripping usually means the safety switch is doing its job. Common causes include a faulty appliance, moisture in outdoor power points or light fittings, damaged cabling, or too many circuits sharing one RCD. Unplug everything on that circuit and try resetting. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, call a licensed electrician.
How many safety switches does my home need?
Under the current Wiring Rules, a home’s final subcircuits should be spread across at least two RCDs, with no more than three circuits on any one RCD. That way, a single fault does not cut power to the whole house. Many older homes have only one safety switch, or none, so adding more is a common upgrade.
Can safety switches be added to an older switchboard?
Often, yes, if the board has room and is in good condition. If the switchboard still uses ceramic fuses, is full, or shows heat damage or possible asbestos backing, replacing the board is usually the safer option. We inspect it and explain the choices before quoting.
