Get Your Home Compliant With Queensland Law
Queensland has the strictest smoke alarm laws in Australia. The rules require photoelectric, interconnected alarms in the right locations in every home – whether you live there, rent it out or are selling.
FCS Electrical and Solar assesses your existing alarms, tells you exactly what is needed and installs compliant alarms – hardwired or 10-year lithium battery, with hardwired or wireless interconnection. As licensed electricians, we can replace hardwired alarms, which is electrical work.

Where Smoke Alarms Must Be Installed
Every Bedroom
An alarm inside each bedroom.
Hallways
In hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home.

Every Storey
On storeys without bedrooms, in the most likely path of travel to exit.
Queensland Smoke Alarm Laws Explained
The requirements have been phased in under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990:
1 January 2017
New homes and substantially renovated homes must comply.
1 January 2022
Homes sold, leased or with a lease renewed must comply.
1 January 2027
All other Queensland homes, including owner-occupied, must comply.
Hardwired vs 10-Year Lithium Battery Alarms
Alarms can be hardwired to mains power, powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, or a combination. An existing hardwired alarm must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric alarm – and installing or replacing hardwired alarms is electrical work for a licensed electrician.
Interconnection can be hardwired or wireless. Wireless interconnection avoids running new cables between alarms, which can make upgrades in existing homes quicker and tidier.

- 10-year batterySealed lithium, non-removable

Landlords, Sellers and Owner-Occupiers
Landlords must make sure alarms meet current requirements and must test and clean them within 30 days before a tenancy starts or is renewed. Alarms more than 10 years old, or that fail to operate, must be replaced. Tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning during the tenancy.
Selling? Your home must already comply. Living in your own home? The deadline is 1 January 2027 – and after that, homeowners should test alarms monthly, clean them as the manufacturer recommends and replace them at 10 years.

Smoke Alarm Installation FAQs
When do all Queensland homes need to comply with the smoke alarm laws?
All domestic dwellings in Queensland must comply by 1 January 2027. Homes that are sold, leased or have a lease renewed have had to comply since 1 January 2022, and new or substantially renovated homes since 1 January 2017. From 2027, owner-occupied homes must also meet the full requirements.
What type of smoke alarms are required in Queensland?
Alarms must be photoelectric, comply with AS 3786-2014, be less than 10 years old and be interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Ionisation alarms are not permitted. Alarms can be hardwired to mains power or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, or a combination of both.
Where must smoke alarms be installed?
Smoke alarms must be installed on every storey, in every bedroom, and in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home. If there is no hallway, an alarm is needed between the bedroom area and the rest of the dwelling. Where a storey has no bedrooms, the alarm goes in the most likely path of travel to exit.
Can I replace a hardwired smoke alarm with a battery one?
No. Under Queensland law, an existing hardwired smoke alarm must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric alarm. Installing or replacing hardwired alarms is electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. Alarms with a 10-year sealed battery can be used in locations that do not already have hardwired alarms.
What are landlords’ smoke alarm obligations in Queensland?
Landlords must ensure the property’s smoke alarms meet current requirements and must test and clean them within 30 days before a tenancy starts or is renewed. Alarms more than 10 years old or that fail to operate must be replaced. Tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning during the tenancy.
How do interconnected smoke alarms work?
Interconnected alarms are linked by hardwiring or by a wireless radio signal, so smoke detected in one room triggers every alarm in the home. This gives earlier warning to people sleeping in other rooms. Wireless interconnection avoids running new cables between alarms, which can make upgrades quicker in existing homes.
