Storm Season on the Sunshine Coast
Summer storms bring lightning, power surges and water ingress. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office advises having water-affected electrical installations and appliances checked by a licensed electrician before they are switched back on.
Once the urgent problem is fixed, it is worth looking at prevention: a switchboard upgrade, extra safety switches and surge protection can reduce the chance of it happening again.

Emergency Electrician FAQs
What is considered an electrical emergency?
Treat it as an emergency if you smell burning or see smoke, sparks or scorch marks, if you get a shock from an appliance, tap or fitting, if water has reached wiring or power points, or if part of your home has lost power and the safety switch will not reset. Keep everyone clear and call for help straight away.
Should I call Energex or an electrician?
Call Energex if your whole street has lost power or if powerlines are down. For fallen lines, call Energex’s emergency number, 13 19 62, and stay at least eight metres away. If the problem is only at your property, such as a tripping safety switch or a faulty power point, call a licensed electrician.
My safety switch keeps tripping and will not reset. What should I do?
Unplug every appliance on the affected circuit and try resetting the safety switch. If it now stays on, plug items back in one at a time to find the faulty one. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is likely in fixed wiring or a fitting. Leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
What should I do if I smell burning from a power point or switchboard?
Stop using the outlet or appliance. If it is safe to do so, turn off the main switch at the switchboard. Do not touch anything that is hot, melted or sparking. If there is smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 000. Otherwise, call a licensed electrician to find and repair the fault before power is restored.
Is it safe to use electrical items after a storm or flood?
Not until they have been checked. Water can damage wiring, switchboards and appliances in ways you cannot see, which creates a risk of shock and fire. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office advises having a licensed electrician inspect water-affected electrical installations and appliances before you switch them back on.
