Know Your System Is Safe and Working as It Should

Most solar systems are installed and then forgotten. Years of heat, UV, salt air and storms take their toll on isolators, cabling and mounting, and output can slip without anyone noticing.

A solar inspection from FCS Electrical and Solar checks the whole system – from the panels on the roof to the inverter and switchboard – and tells you plainly what is working, what needs attention and what can wait. It suits homeowners with older systems, buyers checking a property, and anyone planning to add a battery.

When to book

When to Book a Solar Inspection

Generation Has Dropped

Output is lower than it used to be, or lower than similar systems nearby.

After Storms or Hail

Severe weather can damage panels, cabling and isolators without obvious signs.

Buying or Selling

Confirm the system works and check its age and condition before settlement.

Never Been Checked

A system several years old that has never been inspected is due for a look.

Before Adding a Battery

Make sure the existing system and switchboard are ready for storage.

Isolator Concerns

Some DC isolator models have been recalled – worth checking yours.

Checklist

What Our Solar Inspection Covers

Scope can vary with the system, so we confirm exactly what is included when you book.

Mounting & Roof

Rails, clamps and roof penetrations.

Cabling & Conduit

UV damage, exposed cable and connectors.

DC Isolators

Water ingress, heat damage and operation.

String Testing

Voltage and current on each string.

Insulation & Earthing

Insulation resistance and earth checks.

Findings

Common Issues Found During Inspections

Many problems are invisible from the ground. Typical findings include water inside isolators, UV-damaged cabling, loose mounting hardware, underperforming strings, connectors that have failed, and damage from birds, possums or rodents.

After the inspection you receive written findings with photos, and recommendations sorted into urgent safety items and routine maintenance. If repairs are needed, we provide a quote – there is no obligation to go ahead.

Pre-Purchase Solar Checks

A solar system can add real value to a property – if it works. A pre-purchase check confirms the system is generating, identifies safety issues and gives you a sense of the inverter’s age and condition before you commit.

It also pays to ask the seller for the original installation paperwork, the electrical compliance certificate, equipment details and any remaining warranties before settlement.

FAQs

Solar Inspections FAQs

What does a solar inspection involve?

A typical inspection includes a visual check of panels, mounting and cabling, testing of DC isolators and circuit protection, electrical tests on each panel string, and a review of the inverter’s readings and fault history. We compare output with what the system should produce and provide findings and recommendations. Exact scope varies, so we confirm what is included when you book.

How often should a solar system be inspected?

Follow the manufacturers’ maintenance guidance for your panels and inverter. As a general rule, periodic professional checks help catch problems early, and an inspection is worthwhile after severe weather, if generation drops noticeably, or before adding a battery. Coastal properties can be more exposed to corrosion and moisture, which may justify more frequent checks.

Who should carry out a solar inspection?

Solar systems involve high DC voltages that cannot simply be switched off while the sun is shining, so electrical testing should be done by a licensed electrician with solar experience. In Queensland, electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. Ask for the licence number before booking – ours is 91222.

Should I get a solar inspection when buying a house?

It can be worthwhile. A pre-purchase check confirms the system is generating, identifies safety issues and gives you an idea of the inverter’s age and condition. It also helps to ask the seller for the original installation paperwork, compliance certificate, equipment details and any remaining warranties before settlement.

Can an inspection improve my solar output?

An inspection itself does not increase output, but it can uncover issues that reduce it, such as a faulty string, shading from new growth, a failing inverter or heavy soiling. Fixing those problems can restore the system closer to its expected performance. The report explains what was found and which repairs are worth prioritising.
