Better Light, Lower Running Costs
Good lighting changes how a space feels and works. Swapping tired halogen downlights for LED cuts running costs and heat, while well-placed pendants, strip lighting and outdoor fittings make a home more comfortable and a business more inviting.
FCS Electrical and Solar installs lighting for Sunshine Coast homes and businesses. We help you choose fittings, colour temperature and layout, then install, test and tidy up – with every hard-wired fitting done to AS/NZS 3000 by licensed electricians.

Upgrading Halogen Downlights to LED
One of the simplest upgrades with a noticeable payoff.
Lower Running Costs
LEDs use a fraction of the power of halogens and last much longer.
Less Heat
Cooler fittings make rooms more comfortable in summer.
IC-4 Rated Fittings
Insulation can be laid against them, keeping your ceiling efficient.
Dimmer Compatibility
Many older dimmers need replacing with a compatible trailing-edge model.
Choosing the Right Lights for Each Room
Lumens, Not Watts
Lumens describe brightness; watts describe power use.
Colour Temperature
Warm 3000K for living areas, 4000K for kitchens and work areas, or tri-colour to switch later.
CRI
A higher colour rendering index shows true colours in kitchens and bathrooms.
IP Ratings
Bathrooms and covered outdoor areas need IP44+, exposed outdoor fittings IP65+.
Outdoor and Landscape Lighting
Outdoor lighting makes alfresco areas usable after dark, lights paths and steps safely and helps with security. On the coast, fittings need to handle more than rain – salt air shortens the life of cheaper materials, so we recommend weather-rated fittings with corrosion-resistant finishes.
Sensors and timers keep things simple and save power, whether it is pathway lights, facade lighting or security floodlights.

Lighting Installation FAQs
Can I replace halogen downlights with LED myself?
No. In Queensland, replacing a downlight fitting, transformer or driver is electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician. Swapping a plug-in globe is fine, but hard-wired fittings, new circuits and dimmer changes need a licensed contractor who will test the work and make sure it complies with AS/NZS 3000.
What does IC-4 rated mean on an LED downlight?
IC-4 is the rating for downlights that can be covered or abutted by ceiling insulation. Using IC-4 fittings removes the need for large clearances around each light, so insulation can stay in place, which helps both fire safety and the thermal performance of your ceiling.
What colour temperature should I choose for LED downlights?
Warm white (around 3000K) suits living areas and bedrooms, natural or cool white (4000K) suits kitchens, laundries and workspaces, and daylight (5000K and above) is used in garages and commercial spaces. Tri-colour downlights let you switch between settings after installation if you are unsure which you prefer.
Will my existing dimmer work with LED lights?
Not always. Many older dimmers were designed for halogen loads and can cause LEDs to flicker, buzz or not dim smoothly. Most LED downlights work best with a compatible trailing-edge dimmer. We check dimmer and driver compatibility and replace the dimmer if needed.
What IP rating do outdoor and bathroom lights need?
The IP rating shows how well a fitting resists dust and water. Bathroom zones and covered outdoor areas typically need at least IP44, while exposed outdoor and garden lights should be IP65 or higher. On the coast, choose fittings with corrosion-resistant finishes, as salt air shortens the life of cheaper materials.
Do you install lighting for commercial properties?
Yes. Commercial lighting covers offices, shops, warehouses and common areas, and often includes LED retrofits, emergency and exit lighting, and lighting controls. Commercial work must meet the relevant parts of AS/NZS 3000 and provide suitable light levels for the task, so it pays to plan the layout before fittings are ordered.
