Air conditioning installation

Cool, Quiet Comfort – Installed Properly

A split system is only as good as its installation. The right size for the room, a sensible location for both units, a tidy pipe run, correct drainage and a dedicated electrical circuit all make the difference between a system that runs efficiently for years and one that struggles.

FCS Electrical and Solar handles split system installations for homes and small businesses across the Sunshine Coast. As licensed electricians we look after the electrical side properly – and refrigerant work is handled by an appropriately licensed (ARCtick) technician, which we explain when we quote.

Sizing & placement

Choosing the Right Size and Position

An undersized unit struggles in summer; an oversized one cycles inefficiently. We assess:

Room & Ceiling

Floor area and ceiling height set the volume to condition.

Sun & Windows

A west-facing room with big windows needs more capacity.

Insulation

Ceiling and wall insulation change the load significantly.

Coastal Conditions

Outdoor unit placement and corrosion protection near the beach.

What is included

What a Quality Installation Covers

Your quote lists the exact scope. A typical installation includes:

Mounting

Wall bracket for the indoor unit and a stable, level base or bracket for the outdoor unit.

Pipe Run & Drain

Neat, insulated pipework and a drain that falls correctly to a suitable point.

Electrical Connection

Dedicated circuit, safety switch protection and an outdoor isolator.

Commissioning

System tested, settings checked and operation confirmed.

Handover

How to use the remote, modes and filters, plus your paperwork.

Clean-up

Work area left tidy, packaging removed.

Installation types

Back-to-Back, Two-Storey and Multi-Room

A back-to-back installation, with the indoor and outdoor units either side of the same wall, is the simplest and usually completed within a day. Extended pipe runs, two-storey installs and multi-head systems (several indoor units on one outdoor unit) take more planning.

We also think about noise, airflow, drainage and access for future servicing – and on the Sunshine Coast, how humidity affects comfort. Dry mode and modern inverter units handle humid days well.

Circuits, Switchboards and Running on Solar

Most split systems need their own circuit with safety switch protection. If your switchboard still uses ceramic fuses, has no spare space or is near capacity, it may need upgrading before the new circuit can be added safely – we check this on the quote visit.

On the Sunshine Coast the biggest cooling load usually lines up with peak solar generation. Running the air conditioner during the day uses your own solar power, and timers or app control can pre-cool the home before output drops in the late afternoon. Ask about Energex PeakSmart for compatible models.

FAQs

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs

What licences are needed to install a split system in Queensland?

Two licences are involved. Handling refrigerant, including connecting and charging the pipework, requires an Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick) refrigerant handling licence. Connecting the unit to your home’s electrical supply must be done by a licensed electrician. Check that whoever installs your system covers both, or works with someone who does.

What size split system do I need?

Size depends on the room’s floor area, ceiling height, insulation, window size and which way the room faces. A west-facing living area with large windows needs more capacity than a shaded bedroom of the same size. An undersized unit struggles in summer, and an oversized one cycles inefficiently, so an on-site assessment beats a size chart.

How long does a split system installation take?

A straightforward back-to-back installation, where the indoor and outdoor units sit either side of the same wall, is usually done within a day. Long pipe runs, two-storey installs, extra circuit work or a switchboard upgrade can add time. We explain the scope and timing when we quote.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for a new air conditioner?

Sometimes. Most split systems need their own circuit with safety switch protection. If your switchboard still uses ceramic fuses, has no spare space, or is already near capacity, it may need upgrading before the new circuit can be added safely. We check this during the quote visit.

Can I run my split system on solar power?

Yes. On the Sunshine Coast, the biggest cooling load usually lines up with the hours your solar panels produce the most, so running the air conditioner during the day can use your own solar power instead of grid electricity. Timers or app control can pre-cool the home before solar output drops in the late afternoon.

What is Energex PeakSmart?

PeakSmart is an Energex program for compatible air conditioners fitted with a demand response device. During peak demand, Energex can briefly limit the unit’s power use while it keeps running, and eligible households may receive a reward. Check Energex’s website for current eligible models and offers before buying.
