Renovating?

Use Your Renovation to Modernise the Whole Electrical System

A renovation is the best chance you will get to fix what is behind the walls. With linings off and ceilings open, upgrading old wiring, adding circuits, improving lighting and preparing for solar costs far less than doing it later.

FCS Electrical and Solar covers the electrical and the solar side in one. We visit before demolition, review your plans and tell you what the existing switchboard and wiring can support – so there are fewer surprises once work starts.

  • Site visit and plan review before demolition
  • Switchboard and wiring condition checked
  • Lighting and power planned around your layout
  • Solar and battery provisions while access is easy

Switchboards & safety

Switchboard Upgrades and Safety Switches

Adding or altering circuits brings current Wiring Rules requirements into play. Older boards often need attention:

Ceramic Fuses

Replaced with circuit breakers and modern protection.

No Safety Switches

RCD protection added to the circuits that need it.

No Spare Capacity

Room made for induction, AC, solar or EV circuits.

Worn Components

Heat damage or deterioration found and fixed.

LED downlights, pendants, outdoor and garden lighting.

Data & Outdoor Power

Solar while you renovate

Adding or Upgrading Solar During a Renovation

If roofing, ceilings or the switchboard are already being worked on, cable runs and inverter positions can be planned neatly and the board prepared for a future battery.

If the roof is being replaced, panels are best installed after the new roof is finished, rather than removed and refitted later. We will plan the timing with you.

Smoke alarms

Smoke Alarm Compliance

Homes undergoing substantial renovations in Queensland must meet the current standard: interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms and on every storey. All Queensland homes must meet this standard by 1 January 2027.

Planning alarm positions during the renovation is much easier than retrofitting later.

FAQs

Renovation Electrical & Solar FAQs

When should I book an electrician for my renovation?

Involve an electrician while you are finalising the design, before demolition starts. Electrical decisions affect cabinetry, lighting and appliance positions, and an early site visit can identify whether the switchboard or existing wiring needs upgrading. Rough-in is then scheduled after demolition and framing, and fit-off once walls are finished.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard when renovating?

Not always, but it is common. Older switchboards may use ceramic fuses, lack safety switches or have no room for new circuits for induction cooktops, air conditioning, solar or EV charging. When circuits are added or altered, current Wiring Rules requirements apply, so we check whether the existing board can safely support the work.

Do I need approval for electrical work during a renovation?

In Queensland, electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, who must test the work and provide a certificate of testing and safety. Building approval for structural work is a separate matter for your builder or certifier. Changes to your grid connection, such as adding solar, also require Energex approval.

What if old or unsafe wiring is found during a renovation?

It is common to uncover older wiring, deteriorated insulation or non-compliant work once walls and ceilings are opened. We explain the safety risk, what must be fixed to complete the job compliantly and what is optional, then quote before proceeding. Budgeting a contingency for this is wise in older homes.

Do renovations trigger Queensland smoke alarm requirements?

Yes. Homes undergoing substantial renovations must meet the current standard of interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways and on each storey. The same standard applies to all Queensland homes by 1 January 2027. Planning alarm locations during the renovation is easier than retrofitting later.

Is a renovation a good time to add solar?

Often, yes. If roofing, ceilings or the switchboard are already being worked on, cable runs and inverter positions can be planned neatly, and the switchboard can be prepared for a future battery. If the roof is being replaced, panels should go on after the new roof is finished.
