A Safer, Smarter Heart for Your Electrical System
Your switchboard is where every circuit in the property starts. Older boards were designed for a handful of lights and power points – not the air conditioners, induction cooktops, pool pumps, solar inverters, batteries and EV chargers that many Sunshine Coast homes now run.
A switchboard upgrade replaces outdated fuses with circuit breakers and safety switches (RCDs or RCBOs), gives every circuit proper protection and leaves room for what you plan to add next. It is also something insurers, buyers and property managers increasingly look at.
- Protection against electric shock with safety switches
- Breakers that trip reliably instead of rewireable fuses
- Space and capacity for new circuits
- Clearly labelled circuits for easier fault-finding
- ReplacesCeramic fuses and worn-out boards
- AddsSafety switches on every circuit
- Prepares forSolar, batteries and EV chargers
- Completed byLicensed electricians (Lic. 91222)
Signs Your Switchboard Needs Attention
If any of these sound familiar, have a licensed electrician take a look.
Ceramic Fuses
Rewireable fuses protect wiring, not people. They cannot detect the earth leakage that safety switches do.
Frequent Tripping
Circuits that trip or blow fuses often can point to overloaded circuits or a fault that needs finding.
Heat, Buzzing or Scorch Marks
Discolouration, a burning smell or noise from the board should be checked straight away.
Few or No Safety Switches
Many older homes only have an RCD on the power circuits – or none at all.
No Room for New Circuits
A full board can make adding AC, solar or an EV charger difficult or unsafe.
Older Homes
Boards in pre-1990 homes can have deteriorated components and backing panels that may contain asbestos.
What a Switchboard Upgrade Involves
Every board is different, so we confirm the exact scope in your written quote. A typical upgrade covers:
New Enclosure & Main Switch
A modern enclosure sized for your circuits now, with space for future additions.
Breakers & Safety Switches
Circuit breakers plus RCD or RCBO protection to current Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000).
Surge Protection
Optional surge protection to help protect sensitive electronics and appliances.
Labelling & Testing
Every circuit labelled, tested and recorded, with your certificate of testing and safety.
Ready for Solar, Batteries and EV Chargers
Solar inverters, home batteries and EV chargers each need their own protected circuit and space on the board. If you are planning any of them, upgrading the switchboard first – or as part of the same job – avoids paying for the work twice.
We will also look at your supply. Most homes run on single-phase power, which suits typical household loads. Larger systems, workshops and fast EV charging can call for three-phase, which involves Energex and is more than a switchboard swap. We explain the options before you commit.
Solar-readyMains, Metering and Approvals Handled Properly
Replacing the switchboard itself is work your electrical contractor completes. If the job also changes the mains, the supply capacity or the meter, Energex requirements apply and your retailer’s metering coordinator arranges any meter change.
As a licensed contractor we manage the notifications that apply to your job and tell you upfront what is involved, so you know what to expect before work is booked.

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Common signs are ceramic rewireable fuses, circuits that trip or blow fuses often, no safety switches (or safety switches only on power points), signs of heat or scorching, and a board too full for new circuits. Planning solar, a battery, an EV charger or extra air conditioning is another good reason to have the board assessed.
Is an old fuse board dangerous?
Ceramic rewireable fuses protect wiring from overload, but they do not detect earth leakage, which is how safety switches protect people from electric shock. Older boards can also have deteriorated insulation and, in homes built before 1990, backing panels that may contain asbestos. An upgrade adds circuit breakers and safety switches that meet current Wiring Rules.
Will my power be off during a switchboard upgrade?
Yes. Power has to be isolated while the old board is removed and the new one connected and tested, so plan for an outage on the day. We confirm the expected power-off window when we quote. Empty perishables from the fridge, and tell us early about any medical equipment or work-from-home needs.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for solar or an EV charger?
Not always, but it is common. Solar inverters, batteries and EV chargers each need suitable circuit protection and space on the board, and older or full switchboards often cannot take these safely. We check the board’s condition, capacity and your supply before recommending whether an upgrade is needed.
What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase power?
Most homes have single-phase power, which suits typical household loads. Three-phase supply spreads power across three active conductors and suits larger loads such as big ducted air conditioning, workshop machinery, larger solar systems or faster EV charging. Changing to three-phase involves Energex and is more than a switchboard swap.
Does Energex need to be involved in a switchboard upgrade?
It depends on the scope. Replacing the switchboard alone is done by your electrical contractor. Work that alters the mains, supply capacity or meter involves Energex requirements and your retailer’s metering coordinator, who arranges meter changes. A licensed contractor manages the required notifications on your behalf.
