Smoke alarm law

Smoke Alarm Compliance

Every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms complying with AS 3786-2014 in each bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level by 1 January 2027. Homes being sold or leased must already comply.

Alarms must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery. We can check what you have and upgrade it to meet the law.

FAQs

Residential Electrician FAQs

What are Queensland’s smoke alarm rules for homes?

Every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms complying with AS 3786-2014 in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level by 1 January 2027. Homes being sold or leased must already comply. The alarms must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery.

How much does a residential electrician charge?

It depends on the job. The main factors are how long the work takes, the materials and fittings needed, access (such as roof space or two-storey homes), and whether extra work like a switchboard upgrade is needed. For anything beyond a small repair, ask for a written quote that sets out the scope so you can compare like with like.

Can I do my own electrical work in Queensland?

No. Queensland law prohibits unlicensed people from doing electrical work, including installing or moving power points, light fittings and switches. Illegal DIY work can cause fires and shocks and may affect your insurance. Simple tasks such as replacing a light globe or resetting a safety switch are fine, but wiring work needs a licensed electrician.

When should electrical work happen during a renovation?

Electrical work happens in two stages. The rough-in, which covers running cables and positioning boxes, is done after framing and before walls are lined. The fit-off, which covers installing power points, switches and lights, is done after painting. Plan positions early, because changes after plastering cost more and take longer.

What are the signs my home may need rewiring?

Warning signs include frequent tripping or blown fuses, flickering lights, warm or discoloured power points and switches, a burning smell, and old rubber- or fabric-insulated cabling found during other work. Homes with ceramic fuse boards often have older wiring too. A licensed electrician can test the installation and tell you whether rewiring is needed.

Do you also install solar for homes?

Yes. FCS Electrical and Solar is both an electrical contractor and a solar installer, so we can handle home electrical work and residential solar together. That helps when you are renovating, building or upgrading your switchboard, because circuits, capacity and solar connections can be planned at the same time.
