Faster, More Reliable Connections Than Wi-Fi Alone
For devices that stay in one place – TVs, desktop computers, gaming consoles and work-from-home set-ups – a wired connection is generally faster, more stable and less affected by interference than Wi-Fi. Data cabling also lets you put Wi-Fi access points exactly where they give the best coverage.
FCS Electrical and Solar plans and installs data points alongside your electrical work, which is especially useful in new builds, renovations and office fit-outs. Cabling connected to the telecommunications network must be installed by an ACMA-registered cabler, and we explain how your job is handled when we quote.

Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A Explained
Cat5e
Older standard that handles gigabit over shorter runs – now largely superseded for new work.
Cat6
Suits most homes and small offices. Comfortable gigabit speeds, with 10-gigabit possible over shorter runs.
Cat6A
10-gigabit over the full 100-metre channel with better interference resistance – often chosen for offices and new builds.
Testing, Labelling and Cabling Rules
Every cable run should be tested after installation and labelled at both ends, so adding devices and finding faults later is simple. Cabling must also follow the ACMA cabling rules and the AS/CA S009 wiring standard.
If you need to move your NBN connection box or phone point, cabling on the customer side of the network boundary can be relocated by a registered cabler, while equipment owned by NBN Co is arranged through your internet provider.

How Many Data Points Do You Need?
Most homes benefit from points where fixed devices sit – the lounge, study and main bedroom – plus one ceiling location for a Wi-Fi access point. Offices usually need points at each workstation, printers and meeting rooms, all running back to a cabinet.
Planning extra points during a build or renovation costs far less than adding cabling to finished walls later.

Network & Data Cabling FAQs
Who is allowed to install data cabling in Australia?
Cabling that connects to the telecommunications network, including data and phone points, must be installed by a cabler registered under the ACMA cabling provider rules. Registration is separate from an electrical licence, so ask your installer for their cabling registration details before work starts.
Should I choose Cat6 or Cat6A cabling?
Cat6 suits most homes and small offices and supports gigabit speeds comfortably, with 10-gigabit possible over shorter runs. Cat6A supports 10-gigabit over the full 100-metre channel and has better interference resistance, so it is often chosen for offices, new builds and sites planning for higher speeds.
Is a wired network better than Wi-Fi?
For devices that stay in one place, such as TVs, desktop computers, gaming consoles and work-from-home set-ups, a wired connection is generally faster, more stable and less affected by interference. Data cabling also lets you place Wi-Fi access points where they give the best coverage.
Do I need a data point in every room?
Not necessarily. Most homes benefit from points where fixed devices sit, such as the lounge, study and main bedroom, plus one ceiling location for a Wi-Fi access point. Planning extra points during a build or renovation costs far less than adding cabling to finished walls later.
Can my NBN connection box or phone point be moved?
Relocating cabling on the customer side of the network boundary can be done by a registered cabler. Equipment owned by NBN Co, such as the network termination device, is managed through your internet provider, so some moves need to be arranged with them first.
What is a data cabinet or patch panel?
A data cabinet is a central enclosure where all cable runs terminate on a patch panel. Your modem, network switch and other equipment sit alongside it, keeping everything tidy and labelled. It makes adding devices, fault-finding and future upgrades much simpler for homes and offices.
