A well-designed camera system lets you check on your home or business from your phone, receive alerts and keep footage if something happens. Getting there is mostly about the right cameras in the right places, enough storage, and cabling and power that will not let you down.
FCS Electrical and Solar installs camera systems for Sunshine Coast homes and businesses, along with the power, cabling and security lighting that go with them. We talk through your property, what you want to see and how you want to view it, then recommend options to suit.

Wired PoE or Wireless Cameras?
Wired Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras use a single cable for power and data. They are generally more reliable, are not affected by Wi-Fi dropouts and never need batteries charged – which is why we recommend them wherever cabling is practical.
Wireless cameras are quicker to install in hard-to-reach spots but depend on a strong Wi-Fi signal and a power supply. We will tell you honestly where each makes sense.
- ReliableNo Wi-Fi dropouts
- One cablePower and data together
- No batteriesNothing to recharge
Privacy and Camera Placement
Cameras should cover your property, not your neighbours’ private areas. Audio recording needs particular care: Queensland’s Invasion of Privacy Act 1971 restricts recording private conversations you are not part of, so video-only recording is the usual choice.
Businesses should display clear CCTV signage, tell staff about workplace surveillance and handle footage in line with their privacy obligations.
- Aim cameras at your own property
- Video-only is the safer default
- Signage for businesses
- Secure passwords and updated firmware

Security & CCTV FAQs
Can I view my security cameras on my phone?
Yes. Most modern IP camera systems connect to an app that shows live and recorded footage on your phone, tablet or computer from anywhere with internet access. Setting up secure passwords and keeping the recorder’s firmware updated helps protect your system from unauthorised access.
Are wired or wireless security cameras better?
Wired PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras use a single cable for power and data, so they are generally more reliable, are not affected by Wi-Fi dropouts and do not need batteries charged. Wireless cameras are quicker to install in hard-to-reach spots but depend on a strong Wi-Fi signal and power supply.
How long is CCTV footage stored?
Storage time depends on the number of cameras, their resolution, whether they record continuously or on motion, and the size of the hard drive in the recorder. A typical home system can keep a few weeks of motion-triggered footage. Storage can be sized to suit how long you need.
Is it legal to record audio on CCTV in Queensland?
Be careful. Queensland’s Invasion of Privacy Act 1971 restricts recording private conversations you are not part of, so audio recording can create legal risk. Video-only recording of your own property is generally acceptable, but cameras should not be aimed into neighbours’ private areas. Seek legal advice if unsure.
What resolution security camera do I need?
For most homes and small businesses, 4MP to 8MP (4K) cameras give enough detail to identify people at typical distances. Higher resolution needs more storage and bandwidth. Lens choice and placement matter as much as resolution, especially for reading number plates or covering wide driveways.
Do businesses need signs for CCTV?
It is good practice, and often expected, to display clear signage that CCTV is in operation. Businesses should also tell staff about workplace surveillance and handle footage in line with their privacy obligations. Requirements vary by situation, so check current guidance for your workplace.
